Libraryhack: It’s time to let the data loose

Edge Catalyst Colleen Morgan will present a host of fabulous data visualisations and mash-ups to get you excited and inspired for the  Libraryhack competition.  Data visualisations are a way of making complex data sets meaningful.  They can be beautiful, insightful, informative, entertaining, digital or physical and can reveal relationships you may never have thought of… for example, that most Facebook breakups happen just before the weekend!  Colleen will also highlight the data sets made available by the State Library of Queensland and we will throw around some data visualisation ideas towards the end. Here are some resources to whet your data whistle: http://infosthetics.com/ and http://www.visualcomplexity.com/vc/

Do the photo mash

The State Library of Queensland has opened its photo collection to give you a chance to make something new for Libraryhack. Copyright for these photographs has expired, so you are free to hack and mash them to your heart’s content. This is an exciting opportunity for Queenslanders to have a voice, reinterpret history, say something social, political or just funny! The opportunities are endless, it’s really up to you. Learn how to mash-up historic photographs from Picture Queensland with your own personal photos, or other freely available images found on the internet.

When: 5.30pm-7.30pm, Thursday May 5 OR 5.30pm-7.30pm, Thursday May 12, 2011
Where: The Edge, State Library of Queensland
Tickets: Free
Bookings: Bookings required book.it@edgeqld.org.au

Hack to the future!

Your challenge is to take any number of vintage Queensland songs, superbly preserved as scores by the state library here, and hack them into the 21st century. To kickstart the creation, our resident sound Catalyst Andrei Maberley has taken the digitised scores and turned 20 of them into MIDI files. In this workshop we’ll throw these files into anything that fits in on the Lab 1 computers including Ableton Live, Logic and Garageband. All these scores are out of copyright, so if you think you can take “The Bundaberg Vocal One Step” and turn it into a gritty urban masterpiece, then sign up.

When: Sun 8 May, 1 – 3 pm
Where: The Edge Lab 1, State Library of Queensland
Tickets: Free
Bookings: Bookings required book.it@edgeqld.org.au
